Need drywall compound for your repair but don’t know what to get? At Filadelfia Construction we’ve created this easy to follow guide to help you with your DIY projects. There are different brands and many more types of drywall compounds but we will detail here just a few of our most used kinds. Although most brands are similar we tend to use CGC more often than not.
We will start with our quick drying compounds, for those one day repairs!
CGC Sheetrock Durabond 90 , Setting Type Joint Compound
This drywall compound is the most dense and is used for filling and heavy repairs. When using be as clean as possible as this compound dries very hard and is difficult to remove or even sand. We like to use this compound to level areas that have been repaired, fill gaps or corners before we tape. This extra step will ensure that cracks do not occur. For patches and smaller repairs we recommend using this compound with FibaFuse Fiberglass Tape (Types of tape) for maximum strength. There are options with faster drying times but being how solid this dries we recommend giving yourself time to be sure and satisfied with what you’re doing.
Tips:
· Mix with clean water to ensure the most amount of time before it begins to set and harden.
· Try to finish what you are doing before 45-50 minutes, around this time the compound will begin to set and the mixture becomes more difficult to spread and manipulate.
CGC Sheetrock – Sheetrock 45, Setting Type Drywall Compound
A good all purpose compound. This is one we use often. For small repairs and one day jobs this is a great option. This compound is easy to sand and gives you approximately 25 minutes of easy spread-ability before the mixture begins to harden. When patching in one day our first (after pre-filling with durabond 90) and second coat will be with Sheetrock 45. There is another even faster setting compound Sheetrock20 but for DIY repairs we don’t recommend it due to the limited time you have to apply it.
CGC Sheetrock – Sheetrock 90, Setting Type Drywall Compound
The “I need more time” alternative to our favorite quick setting compound, Sheetrock 45 and its even faster relative, Sheetrock 20.
CGC Sheetrock All Purpose-Lite Drywall Compound, Ready-Mixed
This ready mixed compound is also easy to sand but takes much longer to dry. (In the right conditions, dry and warm) this compound will take hours to dry. This specific kind as per the name, is all purpose. Good for everything not great at anything. We recommend using this for taping or first and second coat of your joint, or repair.
CGC Sheetrock Machine Mud Drywall Compound, Ready-Mixed
Another ready mixed compound, this yellow-orange box is what we recommend for your final coat (skim-coat) or to use with machines (for more experienced tapers). This compound in our experience provides the best consistency and evenness. The red box drying with seemingly more fish-eyes(puck-holes) and the green box with the most. Possibly due to the higher amount of bonding agents.
CGC Sheetrock All Purpose Drywall Compound, Ready-Mixed
Ready mixed compound with the most bonding. Great for taping not so great for finishing. Use this if you need large areas taped (an entire room/area/floor).
Pro Tip: Although some compounds say ready- mixed we recommend adding water to all compounds. Varying the amount to reach ideal consistency. (How to Mix Drywall Compound)
